The Narratives of Finland

12.10.2023 - 18.2.2024

Historical Culture, the Arts and Changing Nationality

The three artworks in the museum’s Collection exhibition are part of the University of Helsinki’s discipline of Political History Narratives of Finland project, which explores Finnish historical culture. What kind of narratives are told about Finnish history, how have their contents been negotiated and what meanings do citizens assign to these narratives?

The artistic part of the project brings the concept of Finnishness into the debate and invites artists from diverse backgrounds to contribute to its reflection and renewal. At the Helinä Rautavaara Museum, Ennisofia Salmela Flores will explore this theme with her work Letters from Argentina, Nadiye Koçak with their mosaic work Unity, and Mervi Junkkonen and Mia Malviniemi with their video work In the Same Boat.

In total nine of the project’s artists were selected through an open call for applications and their works will be on display from 2023-2024 also at Mannerheim Museum, Cultural Centre Caisa, Gallen-Kallela Museum and Vantaa Art Museum Artsi. The Narratives of Finland project is funded by the Kone Foundation.
