From visitor to author

Opening up collections to new interpretations

The museum invited young adults and families with children from African backgrounds living in Finland to explore and reinterpret the museum’s Africa collection. The aim of the project was to develop and test community-based and decolonial ways of producing, communicating and opening up information on cultural heritage materials. At the same time, we wanted to raise museum visitors’ awareness of sustainable development and the role of culture as part of it.

The workshops were held between 2024 and 2025 and the new narratives that emerged are now integrated into the collection exhibition. 25 people have participated in the joint work.

The project was funded by the National Board of Antiquities.
